– I attended a mid-NJ ASTD session this week on Compliance (kindly hosted by the folks at J&J) – interestingly enough, a discussion I’ve had recently with several involves the role of communications/writing training and compliance. How important is it for people to be trained in what to write/say/present (even just internally)? Well, I heard about a massive, multi-million $$ fine that mainly hinged on a very poorly worded e-mail about some study results. We’ve all read the embarrassing revelations of written stuff (all discoverable in a lawsuit) that really puts a company in a bad light. Lesson: you can pay a little now to train – or pay a lot later to implement a consent decree.

– Making a vendor map – this idea was sparked by a couple of my clients, who have more systematically assembled a list of current vendors, and asked for recommendations of new vendors. This made it immensely easy for me to know precisely which new suppliers would be optimal, AND it was a great way for the department to map out an overview of their current suppliers for discussion and evaluation. So I adapted the idea into a new form which is available by free download: Training Vendor Map Impactiviti. Feel free to adapt and use it, and if you’d like to have a visit (live or by phone) to discuss your upcoming needs, just contact me and we’ll set it up (stevew at impactiviti dot com)

– A couple new job postings, in PA (Manager, Sales Training) and NJ (Associate Sales Training Manager).

– What’s the great un-equalizer when it comes to creating success? Initiative.

(Job Openings, NYC area, pharma/agency experience)

Impactiviti is helping a client find two key people for important roles in the company’s future growth.

This creative Communications/Training boutique agency needs two top-level Executive Producers – one for Training Solutions, the other for Communications Solutions.

These are not mere jobs – they are leadership positions with great growth potential. See Adobe Acrobat files below for full descriptions:

Executive Producer Training Position

Executive Producer Communications Position

Instructions for submitting an application are in each document. High-maintenance misfits, clock-punching drones, and management amateurs would not fit the culture or the need (really – would you want to work for or with someone like that? Just saying…!)

Impactiviti is serving in a consultative role for this need, and is not the hiring agent. Please do not follow up by email or phone. You will be contacted if you fit the desired profile.

Job Opening: Account Manager

I have a vendor/partner who is looking for an experienced, highly reputable Account Manager to help grow business in existing pharmaceutical client (training/communications) accounts.

This is mainly an “outside” account manager position – you’re spending lots of time in the client space growing existing relationships, making new contacts, and facilitating communications and service. It is not a project manager position, nor is it a sales (go out and hunt for new accounts) role.

The successful candidate already has a history of successfully doing this kind of work. You have a proven track record of satisfying clients and deepening/broadening business relationships with commercial pharma clients. You work independently and know how to manage time, tasks, and relationships with minimal supervision.

Description & Details

Role Summary:

The Account Manager (AM) is responsible for managing active client business, mainly in the realms of sales training and internal communication programs for pharmaceutical and biotech clients. The successful AM will serve as key client communications interface for new business and overall customer satisfaction. Strategic thinking, knowledge of life sciences training methodology and a proactive, outgoing, and ethical disposition are indispensable. The successful AM is expected to identify new business opportunities with assigned clients and assist in the preparation and response to Requests for Proposal (RFP’s). The AM is responsible for growing the business footprint within existing clients.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Develop and maintain productive business relationships with clients at assigned accounts
  • Collaborate with clients to develop strategic solutions to meet client training and communication objectives
  • Identify and secure new business with current clients
  • Contribute to the creative process for the development of proposals and training designs
  • Collaborate with internal project managers to ensure client satisfaction with ongoing work
  • Work closely with company executive management in nurturing new business growth opportunities

A.S.K. (Ability/Skills/Knowledge):

  • College Degree
  • Minimum 4 years experience account management experience (on the vendor/supplier side, working to serve commercial pharma/biotech clients)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to think and plan strategically to meet client business needs
  • Strong organization skills
  • Understanding of pharmaceutical industry and related healthcare businesses
  • Knowledge of the science of training, adult learning principles, and blended learning methods as applied to pharmaceutical and biotech sales force training is preferred.
  • Ability to work well with others as part of a team, but also a proven ability to work independently
  • Exceptional interpersonal communication skills
  • Basic Computer/Productivity software skills a must; knowledge of internet and digital products is preferred
  • Professional and positive demeanor

 Location:

  • Candidate will already be located in the CT-NY-NJ-PA corridor (NJ/Philly area is ideal)

Disqualifiers (the Do Not Apply section): You don’t currently, or haven’t previously, worked on the vendor/agency side serving pharma clients. You think the term “pro-active” refers only to some kind of skin cream. You’ve never worked in a fast-moving and entrepreneurial environment. You don’t like people. You live in northwest Wisconsin and once took antibiotics so that must be close enough.

How to apply: E-mail your resume and a cover letter to jobs(at)impactiviti.com. Do not make phone calls to follow-up, or send e-mails regarding status. You will be contacted if you are under active consideration.

(P.S. – those in the Impactiviti “Inner Circle” who know of potentially great candidates are welcome to contact me directly)

Today is another one of those “Ugggh!” days, when one of my pharma clients is announcing a major new round of layoffs. I’ve seen a lot of these in the past few years, and every time, good people are forced to re-think their career direction.

Re-thinking is hard. And in a time when constant marketplace change is the new normal, it’s unavoidable. Permanent employment with ever-stable companies – that’s a thing of the past.

Our only security is network security – building a high-quality network of great people, interconnected with other great people. That’s where new opportunities and open doors will appear. Jobs may be eliminated, companies may falter – but your best professional move is to grow a network of people. That’s one reason why I’ve built the Impactiviti network.

And, if you’re downsized, some of those very people may be the ones who best recognize what you could/should be doing next. Sometimes, disruption forces us to re-consider and re-calibrate.

I was sitting in front of the fire with a friend last night who is probably best described as under-employed. As we talked about his skills and successes, an underlying theme became clear – he actually had a set of skills that just about any worthwhile company would need (and pay handsomely for). It just came down to recognizing it, defining it, and (our next step) “packaging” him for a new phase of his career.

I have no doubt that many of my displaced pharma friends are loaded with marketable skills. A layoff can be a very isolating experience, and can cause us to question our worth, but the best course to take is to pro-actively network with others. Initiate a LinkedIn contact. Invite someone you barely know for coffee. Share war stories and contacts. It’s your future, and your security – build it!

For those in pharma who would like to plug into some networking groups with other industry colleagues, I have set up a couple LinkedIn networking groups, as has the SPBT (Society of Pharmaceutical and Biotech Trainers):

>>Join SPBT networking group (client-side and vendors allowed)

>>Join Impact Life Sciences sales-training-marketing networking group (current employees of pharma/biotech/device companies; no vendors)

>>Join Impactiviti Pharma Talent networking group (job seekers from pharma/biotech/device companies, sales-training-marketing; no vendors)

You can join any or all that apply.

For those displaced, we’ve also set up a Job Board here; you can also use a meta-job-search engine like Indeed.com and Juju.com.

Don’t lose heart – instead, build something for you.
