How Can We…?

September 24, 2011 by Steve Woodruff

I go to pharma-centric conferences and as we discuss social media, the question generally is, “How can we do social media and not get into trouble?”

I spend time with e-patients and the question is, “How can we change the world?”

Big difference.

Yes! I witnessed another key difference between two stakeholder groups at Medicine 2.0, during a panel about how an entrepreneur teamed up with an academic to create a successful behavior change tool (Qpid.me).

Essentially, making sweeping generalizations for sake of the discussion: Entrepreneurs act on hunches and break rules, academics want to study, be methodical, and follow rules. Public health officials currently think more like academics – they want to be careful and have evidence before they move forward on an initiative – whereas entrepreneurs have so much less to lose and therefore take more chances.

Here’s a post by Stephanie Habif, one of the panelists (and the matchmaker between the entrepreneur and the academic on the team):
